Self-Harm and Cutting

December 19, 2011

Self-harm and “cutting” has become an increasing concern for professionals who work with adolescents.  Why do you think teenagers become involved with inflicting pain on themselves?  Teenagers become involved with inflicting pain on themselves so they do not have to deal with the mental pain.  They are young and many times they do not know how to deal with the pain rather than hurting themselves, it is their way of relief.  The focus is on the physical pain they are feeling and they welcome that because the mental pain is too much to deal with.   The lack of parental support, parental control, and parental participation contributes to the problem and can really hurt one’s self image.  Another contributing factor is when an adolescent does not have a sense of belonging.
