Take Precautions: Just Because He Seems Nice Does Not Make It So

January 19, 2012

When people think of rape many times people may think of strangers however, in more than half of the rapes committed, the victim knows their attacker this is called date rape or acquaintance rape.  Just because you go out with friends, acquaintances, or dates that does not necessarily mean you will become a victim of violence.  It just means when dating or going out with acquaintances, or someone you barely know be cautious of your surroundings and the people who are around you.  Here are some dating tips:

  • When going out on a date it is important to find out as much as you possibly can about your date especially if it is a blind date.
  • If you are going on a blind date or with someone you don’t know well you should consider double dating.  You can still get to know one another in a safer environment.
  • Find out before your date what the plans are and make sure you tell your parents or a friend and give them a tentative time you plan on returning home.
  • When going out have “just in case” money if you don’t like where things are going use your “just in case money” to get out of there.  Call a cab or contact someone like a parent or trusted friend to come and get you.
  • While on your date be cautious of your alcohol or drug consumption because it decreases your ability to react.  If you are on a blind date or even if you’re out with friends and acquaintances be aware of how much you drink or please don’t drink or use drugs at all.
  • Do not accept drinks from other people if you feel drunk and haven’t drunk any alcohol or, if you feel like the effects of drinking alcohol are stronger than usual get help right away.
  • If you realize you left your drink unattended, pour it out.
  • Do not leave a party, restaurant, etc…, with any guy you don’t know or hardly know.  If you decide to leave make sure you tell someone that you’re leaving and with whom you are leaving with.  Give them as much information as you can about the person you are leaving with.
  • If you do not know your date well do not go in your home or anyone’s home alone with him.  Do not go alone in an apartment, car, or any secluded areas.
  • Listen to your instincts if you do not feel comfortable in any situation find ways to remove yourself from the situation.
  • It is okay to say “NO” be assertive and be straight forward say it loudly and clearly so that there are no misunderstandings.
